Our distance runners were very much in evidence at the national juvenile track and field championships in Tullamore at the weekend. The club had three runners in the 3000m under 18 race. Shay McEvoy took the seven and a half laps in his stride and had a comfortable lead when crossing the finish line in 8.51.27 to take the gold. Kevin Burns finished 9th and Luke Whelan was 14th. There was another excellent performance from James Kearney who won bronze in the under 18 steeplechase. In the 3000m under 17 Cathal Kearney placed 10th and John Mudowney was 12th. Today was a big day in the life of Ciara Deely. It was Day 1 of the World Junior track and field being held in Tampere, Finland. Ciara ran in Heat 2 of the 400m and gave an excellent account of herself as she placed 6th in 54.69 seconds, marginally outside her PB. Congratulations to Ciara and her coach Nicola Barron on this achievement.

July 8 – Round 2 Of National League

2018-07-16T10:29:16+00:00

If travelling to Belfast for Round 1 proved difficult because of the distance involved, then travelling to Santry for Round 2 should have been considerably easier. But then perhaps it wasn’t the travelling that was difficult. Our four man team on this occasion – Nicholas Dunphy, Luke Whelan, Brendan Hyland and Kevin Burns – gathered a mere 23 points when 123 points might have helped us to stay in the competition.

2018-07-16T10:12:05+00:00

Our next generation of athletes enjoyed their day in the sun as they competed in the national juvenile finals in a very warm Tullamore stadium. Our oldest athletes in action today were under 13 boys Alex Cullen and Adam Slawinski. Both performed well and establised new PBs. Alex in the long jump, jumped 4.73m and won bronze. Adam, in the high jump cleared 1.45m and also won bronze. Two great prospects for the future. Our under 10s really excelled. Paul Millea and Robert Lacey won silver in the 500m Pair final, helped enormously by an outstanding race from Robert. Robert was [...]

June 30 – Ciara is Junior Champion

2018-07-16T10:10:59+00:00

Tullamore resembled a bake oven today for the national junior and under 23 championships. Ciara Deely was not influenced by it as she won her heat and final to take the national 400m title. Tom O’Keeffe was also in excellent form to tackle the 5000m in that searing heat. Running well he placed third in 15.21.93. Juveniles making their debut at this level were Shay McEvoy in the 1500m and James Kearney in the 3000m steeplechase. They finished 4th and fifth respectively while Martyna Balcer was8th in the long jump. It was a disappointing day for under 23 athletes, Jack Manning [...]

2018-07-16T09:42:17+00:00

It was an under-strength team which made its way to the first round of the national league at the Mary Peters Track in Belfast. A total of seven men competed for us in the Premier Division. Jack Manning was in big demand covering the 400m, Discus, 56lbs and 4x100m relay. Brendan Hyland made an excellent mark with victories in the Shot and Javelin. Callan Byrne covered the 100m and 200m. James Kearney placed second in the steeplechase as did Nicholas Dunphy in the Walk. Rory McGabhann in the high jump and Rory Lodge in the 800m completed the team scoring. Finishing [...]
