Results 2022

St Stephen’s Day brought success on the roads for a number of our athletes. Peter Lynch and Jamie Gahan headed to Clonmel for the annual 4 mile run. Both ran well with Peter taking first place in 18.37 and Jamie placing fourth in 19.40. 

Nearer home the Richardson family took on the Stoneyford 5K and made it their own with Aoibhe first female finisher in 17.08, Grace second, Ella third and Niamh fourth. Could that be a record in a 5K race!! Clare Lodge, Hannah Lodge and Barbara Rossiter were among the finishers. Eoin Everard took first place in the men’s race with a fine 15.01 time. Tom Lodge was third and Johnny Collins fifth. 

Considering the travel to Turin, Italy for the Spar European cross country we joked that it would be easier than the travel to Donegal for the nationals. It didn’t turn out that way. Starting out on Friday morning a heavy frost with fog didn’t auger well. Then ice problems at the airports led to delays, taxi journeys and even flight cancellations. However the show must go on.

The course itself proved challenging – especially the steep rise following an uphill pull and then a soft and steep part on the downhill. Of course there was a gentle 50m stretch  – indoor and on carpet. Who wouldn’t enjoy it!!!

Our athletes did us proud. Hannah Kehoe on her first European cross country had a good run in the under 20s to finish 72nd. Shay McEvoy  competing in the U23 race was full of running and finishing 15th was third scorer on the Irish team ensuring third place and bronze medals for the team. This proved important as team favorite Darragh McIlhenny had an off day. Then Aoibhe Richardson finishing 46th also won bronze with the senior ladies. The senior men finished in a somewhat disappointing 8th place as most of the team found the competition and the course rather stiff. Peter Lynch ran his usual unrelenting style to move through the field and finishing 15th he was first scorer for the team. Well done all. KCH Abu.    

Night time – frost – fog -What about it – It was all go for the Uneven ages B Counties cross country in Thomastown tonight. Our young athletes didn’t seem to mind. They enjoyed the outing in fact and also ran well. The McIntyres were very much in evidence with Cian winning the boys U7 and Daniel winning boys U9. The under 9s also had Daniel Quinn 3rd, Dylan Guilfoyle 6th, James Healy 8th and Dara Sweeney 12th.

The under 11 boys were first team with Conor Knox in second winning silver. Other team members were Evan Cody 4th, Liam Crowley 9th, Tommy FitzPatrick 17th and Cathal Comerford 19th.

The curtain closed on the national cross country championships at a muddy venue in Cork today. One wonders if the mud is really necessary!! In any event twenty plus of our athletes competed and while there were no individual medals among the juvenile cohort there were many fine performances. Starting with the U11s – Kate Kelly in 36th was the first scorer on the county team. She had Ellen Ryan 161 and Mealla Crowley 164 in support. For the boys we had Darragh O’Callaghan n 31st place – scoring on the 3rd place Leinster team to earn himself an All Ireland medal. 

Sinead Cormack was in fine form. Finishing in 18th place she was first scorer for the county and missed out on a medal with 4th placed Leinster team. The club team with Emma Kelly 87, Ellen Cormack 120 and Amelia O’Brien 136 were 14th club. Robert Coogan had a great run in the boys race. Placing 8th he was first scorer on the county team and third scorer on the Leinster team with which he won a gold medal.

Clodagh O’Callaghsan was in action for the U15 girls and finished 29th. That made her the first of the county team to cross the finish line and also earned her a bronze medal with Leinster. Kyrell Mtinsi was very much on his own with neither club nor county team for company. Not to worry, he took on the field and while still U14 he had an excellent run to finish 18th and win gold with Leinster. 

Cristina Capital Martin had her best race of the season and finished 9th in the U17 race. First of the county team home but also winning gold with Leinster was a just return for her efforts. Aoife FitzGerald finished 105th. Ruairi McEvoy 34th and Paddy Kelly 51st were the first two of the county team to finish.

Eleanor Godden ran well for the U19s to finish 40th while Billy Coogan won silver with the Leinster team after an 11th place finish.

Our Novice ladies were both club team and county team placing 10th and 7th respectively. Ella Richardson ran well to place 15th. Completing the team were Maebh Maher 64, Cara Maher 80 and Caoilfhionn Ni hArgain 92. It’s great to have a team competing in this event. Cathal O’Reilly, finishing 3rd, was back in form and was our only individual medal winner this weekend. He also had the honour of being first scorer for the county team.   

Some thirty plus KCH members were among the one thousand plus runners in today’s Waterford Half Marathon. Quite a number of them had been on the Medieval Mile route last night. It didn’t militate against their performances – Graham Bourne clocked 1.17.56, Declan Walshe 1.27.04. Claire Dermody home in 1.28.41 was one of the early finishers. Among our regular distance runners taking part were Paul Moran, Andy Hanrahan, Ciaran Hughes, Tony Lauhoff, Sean O’hArgain, Eddie Hawe, Noel Sugrue, Seamus Kavanagh, Mary Prendergast, Caoimhe Foley, Sheila O’Callaghan, Annemarie Shortall, Irene Henebry, Dee Scott, Breegeen Murphy, Anita Byrne, Geraldine Grogan, Emma Kennedy, Aisling Gannon.

The Medieval Mile took place tonight along the now “traditional” route – starting out on the Castlecomer road (beside James ‘ Stephens barracks), swinging down the Old Mart Road, into Irishtown, up High Street and finishing on the Parade. Thanks to Nicholas Dunphy, Laura Langton and all the race committee this race has become a welcome part of the Yulefest activities. Thanks also to KCH volunteers, Kilkenny County Council, The Gardai and of course myrunresults for the instant publication of the results. 

Eoin Everard was first over the finish line in 4.28 – no danger to the sub four prize. Ella Richardson was second female finisher in 4.59. Under 14 athlete, Kyrell Mtinsi, was overall tenth in 4.53. A number of club juveniles were among the early finishers – Paul Millea, Cathal Rossiter, Daire O’Flaherty, to name a few.   Eleanor Godden in 5.52 was first junior female across the line.
