The B championships, held in Gowran today, proved a useful experience for a number of our young juveniles. Darragh O’Callaghan, having led from the start, took first place in the under 7s. Another Darragh, Darragh Browne (6) also ran well in the under 7s as did Ronan Hogan (5). For the girls Ella O’Flaherty (6) and Rachel Hogan (5) ran well. In the under 9s there was some good running from the Cormacks, Ellen (7) and Sinead (5). The boys were out in force with Patrick Wall setting the pace. Michael Phelan (8) on his first cross country run lost his footwear but pushed on and passed a number of athletes on his way to the chute. Others were Daire O’Flaherty (10), Tom Henderson (19), Conor Henderson (9) , Shay Molloy (20), Paddy Gibbs (35) and Eddie Murphy (26). Clodagh O’Callaghan (1) set the pace for the under 11s and had good support from Eimear Cormack (3). The pity was that they had no third runner to make a team!!! A fast finishing Luke Browne (4) represented the club in the boys under 11. In the girls under 13 Ella Wall (10) ran particularly well in the early part of the race but yielded some ground on the run home. All in all this was a good day but we need to get more of our athletes out. One wonders why coaches volunteer so much time throughout the year for athletes who don’t compete!
