2020 Results

Cross country on the track. That's what the Coronavirus reduced cross country to this year. The first round of the county championships got the go-ahead but then the season was closed down. So Athletics Ireland suggested a virtual event to give the young athletes a challenge. KCH athletes rose to the challenge and took part in runs over the relevant distances during training in Scanlon Park. Thanks to the hardworking efforts of our county board and officials of local club, St Joseph's, the first roundof the county cross-country championships went ahead today. Entries, warm-up, toilets, course preparation etc were all in place but the only thing outside human control was the weather and some would say we had "real cross-country" weather - others said it was shocking. In any event the races, without u8s and u10s, went ahead. Great credit to all -athletes, parents, coaches and officials - who braved the storm and got the races over without a hitch. Seven months without competition. Seven months without a chance to compete. Not since the Indoors in February have our juvenile athletes had a chance to flex their lungs and muscles. And with training suspended for most of that time it was with a sense of freedom that a group of our younger athletes headed to Kilmacow today for thew Open CC organised by St Senan's athletic club. The National Masters track and field were held today in Morton Stadium. With just two Harriers taking part it was 100% return medalwise. James Ledingham took gold in the 800m over 35 in a fine time of 2.00.47. The silver was won by Karen Nugent in the over 50 javelin. Her throw was 17.03m.

The National junior track and field championships were held today in Morton Stadium. Cathal O'Reilly was the club's sole participant this year. Running in the 1500m he gave agood account of himself with a time of 4.11.83. well done Cathal. 

The Covid 19 put paid to most athletic events for the last six months. However, thanks to Co Kilkenny Athletics Board and host club, St Joseph's AC, the county 10K road race went ahead at the Pink Rock this evening. KCH were very much to the fore with twelve athletes competing and they weren't just out for a run. They were there to compete. And they did with the Ladies winning gold and the Men winning silver. A large number of athletes went to the start line for this year's senior (including Masters and U23) national 10k track event in the Morton Stadium today (Saturday). Among them were two of KCH finest distance runners Brian Maher and Eoin Everard. When the field broke up both were in the leading group of 12. Mick Clohessey, Raheny Shamrocks led them out until John Travers, Donore, took the lead. Our two athletes were still with the lead group although Brian was a bit adrift. Owing to the Covid 19 pandemic Athletics Ireland decided to run the senior track and field for 2020 over two weekends. This is the first weekend and the lone representative from the club was Jack Manning. Jack competed in the 400m heat on Saturday where he placed second in 49.43. In Sunday's final where his time was 49.72 he placed seventh. John Fagan, a former Harrier (Clonliffe),  placed 4th in the 400m hurdles final.

An initiative by the County Kilkenny Athletics Board brought athletes from far and wide t0 Scanlon Park today for an opportunity to flex their muscles - there having been a dearth of competition because of Covid 19. Among the Harriers taking part were Callan Byrne 3/100 11.26, Jack Manning 5/100 11.29 and 2/400 49.45 (this event was won by former KCH man John Fagan now with Clontarf Harriers); Cathal O'Reilly 5/1500 4.08.94, Dylan McLaughlin 11/1500 4.21.75; Catriona Twomey 4/Shot 9.12 and 4/Javelin 27.11 and Cliodhna Manning 5/Shot 8.61. 

For some twenty plus years Brian Maher has been creating all kinds of records - club records, county records and indeed national rercords. So perhaps for him today was just another "day at the office". The office was the Tallaght athletic track and the job in hand was the 5K in the Dublin Graded meet number 3. Finishing 7th in 14.34.69 - a time many senior athletes would be proud of - confirms him as the national 5K Track O/40 Record Holder. Congrats.
