We had good results at the Even Age county cross country relays held in Conahy today. The club fielded teams in five of the relays and had five first place finishes. There were also a number of lesser team places. The old and reliable stratedgy of having subs was also in evidence as some teams were left short as a couple of athletes had to withdraw because of illness. The under 8 open races got the proceedings under way. Kate Kelly and Ella Flaherty clinched silver and bronze medals in the girls race and Callum Roantree won gold in the [...]
Our Intermediate men made a successful outing at the cross country championships in Conahy today. Mossie Roantree after a fine run had to settle for individual silver but had some consolation in leading his teammates to championship gold. He was supported by Padraig Keane 4th, Graham Bourne 9th , Niall Lacey 12th and Oisin MacCinneide 20th. Our ladies team had to settle for bronze behind strong teams from Thomastown and Gowran. Veteran Cathy Millett was her usual excellent self. Running well she finished fourth. Behind her she had Kate Millea 7th, Emily Maher 9th, Sheila O'Callaghan 10th and Joya Burns [...]
Rory McGabhann followed up his county Indoor participation with a 4th place finish in the National Junior Indoor championships. This was achieved with a clearance of 1.80m. This is considerably below his usual standard but good to be back on the competition road after and injury hampered 2019.
Barrow Harriers hosted this years open cross-country in Graiguenamanagh today and an excellent job they did too. Our Over 35s were scarce but the men managed a team with John O'Donnell giving a sterling pereformance to finish 4th amid strong competition. Noel Sugrue placed 12th and Paul Larkins completed the scoring in 24th place. Our juveniles did very well. All the under 8s collected medals - and quality medals at that. The girls had Emma Kelly 1st, Ella O'Flaherty 3rd, Anna O'Brien 4th and Rachel Foley 12th. The boys had Calum Roantree 4th and Cillian fogarty 13th. Our U10 athletes [...]
A small group of our athletes had respite from the winter weather in the beautiful indoor arena in Athlone today. But there was no respite from the competition as there were big numbers competing in these national combined events. Each athlete competed in hurdles, high jump, shot, long jump and finally the 800m. A fine days work for any athlete! Alex Cullen had a fine competition but was down the field with just the 800m to go. Giving it everything he made it his best scoring event - 675 points- giving him a total of 2215 and more importantly a [...]
The sun shone in Gowran today for Day 1 of the Leinster CC. Following yesterday's rain the underfoot conditions were "soft" in places. Our athletes gave us plenty to cheer about - none better than our under 10s (indeed some of them are still U9). Emma Kelly took the silver in the girls race while Darragh O'Callaghan took the gold in the boys race. Among the other good performers were Peter Quinn, Dara Foley and Darragh Browne. Then it was on to the relays where the U12 girls (A team) gave an outstanding performance to take second place. Patrick Lacey [...]
It was a good day all round for the club at the county indoor track and field at Athlone IT with the juveniles winning the Fr Nicholas Flavin Shield and the adults winning the Senior and Masters Shield. There was a good turnout of athletes and many competed in a number of events. The juveniles were very much to the fore. Under 12 athlete Matias Quaglia made a fine return to athletics with Gold in 60m, Long Jump and Shot. Under 17 athlete Jennifer Obah was equally impressive with gold in 60m, 200m and the hurdles. There were clean sweeps [...]
