A good turnout from our juvenile athletes brought good results from the St Senan's Open Cross-Country today. The weather was more like "track weather" with blazing sun and calm conditions all contributing to an enjoyable event. The club had three gold medal finishers with Daniel McIntyre, Kate Kelly and Kyrell Mtinsi. There were team silver medals for the three teams that fielded - Boys U12, Girls U12 and Boys U14. Well doneto all who turned out, especially those on their first venture into cross country competition. The experience gained will help the athletes in the up-coming county championships. Some great performances by athletes under KCH colours in today's festival of races around Kilkenny. This was particularly obvious in the half marathon with Graham Bourne and Paul Moran scoring second and third respectivel. Their respective times were 1.21.39 and 1.22.48. Andrew Smith was 5th in 1.24.08 and Diarmuid Cullen 8th in 1.26.27. Other finishers were Oisin O Cinneide, Jan Hazenberg and Breegen Murphy. In the 10K   Gretta Beckett finished in 53.49, Martin Dowling 55.08 and Bridget Rochford in 1.01.45. Jackie Varley did the 30K in 3.28.39.   

While it might appear from the report on the National League final that KCH are short of "distance" runners the opposite is in fact the case. The distance people have been active all year with athletes like Cathal O'Reilly, Eoin Everard, Brian Maher etc scoring in national and international events. Then we had Graham Bourne turning in a mighty performance to place 6th (2.52.03) in the Viking Waterford marathon in June. More recently it has been the half marathons that have stirred the sweat. Molly Daly competed in the AAAs in Bedford today, her first venture on the international stage and we expect it won't be her last. Molly competing in the 200m under 15  won her heat but a lane infringement kept her out of the final. An unfortunate start to an international career but an experience which will stand to her in the years ahead. Go Molly.
