Once again the ever popular Streets of Kilkenny was a resounding success. Proof of it’s popularity showed itself with places being sold out months in advance and given the enjoyment felt tonight it augers well for the years ahead. Thanks then goes to Club chairman and race director, Nicholas Dunphy, his hardworking committee and the many volunteers without whom the race couldn’t be held. Thanks also to PopUpRaces who manage the entries and the prompt results, and of course the sponsorship by Peugeot and our local sponsors.
Tonight’s 5K race, the two laps city circuit starting and finishing on The Parade, was held in excellent conditions and attracted runners from far and wide. The four provinces were represented with athletes from more than sixty clubs involved. KCH with senior, junior, juvenile and Fit4Life had well in excess of one hundred runners in the race. We also had winners. First across the finish line was Cathal O’Reilly in 14.15 just ahead of Pierre Murchen (Dublin City Harriers) last year’s winner. There was a first also for Ruairi McEvoy (15.07) in the juvenile section where Callum Barron (15.14)placed second. Another first was scored by M40 athlete Jamie Gavin (15.00). Third place in the M40 went to Brian Maher (15.12). Little wonder then that the team prize went to the KCH team of O’Reilly, Gahan, McEvoy, Meghan McCarthy (18.15), Clare Allen (18.49) and Leanne Butler (19.13).
The first lady home was Emily Sisson (14.57), US Olympian; second Ide Nic Dhomhnaill (15.58) West Limerick; Orla Duffy (16.35) Dublin City Harriers.
