The weather stayed fine for the long day of competition in Scanlon Park for Day 1 of the county track and field championships. There were big numbers competing and KCH enjoyed many successes across both juvenile and senior events with the result that KCH have established a healthy lead in the points for the shields.
SENIOR
Thanks to Kate Millea and Graham Bourne our seniors were out in greater than usual numbers with most events covered. The afore-mentioned duo lead by example competing in multiple events. Cathal O’Reilly with a sterling performance won gold in the 1500. Helen Bacon had triple gold in 100, 200 and 1500 (over 50s). In addition to the individual performances the club had two relay teams in both ladies and men 4x100m relay races with both teams inishing first and third in each race.
JUVENILE
The juveniles were out in force from under 8 to under 19 and were very successful, especially on the track. While all did well the U13s were especially active and successful. There were three clean sweeps – Jasmine Timmons McEneaney, Mollie Rose Keegan and Ella Sorohan in the 200m; Amelia O’Brien, Katie Byrne and Emma Kelly in 80m; Daire O’Flaherty, Ruadhan McGuinness and Daithi Egan in high jump and Killian Croke, Fiach Crowley and Daithi Egan in 80m. In addition the girls were 1st and 3rd in 4×100 and the boys 1st and 3rd in their relay. There were further clean sweeps – Boys U10 shot (Daniel McIntyre, Cillian Maher, Daniel Quinn); Boys U11 in 80m (Cathal Comerford, Caolan Bambrick, Simon Brennan); Girls U11 in 500m (Kate Kelly, Julia Daly, Ellen Ryan) and the girls under 15 who took 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 4x100m relay final.
The achievements in the relays were outstanding – 24 sets of medals – 13 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze. Roll on Day 2 for more fun and more success.
