Oct 02 the Battle of the Schools

The Annual Primary Schools cross-country was held in ideal conditions in the Castle Park today. Large numbers turned out to do battle for their schools and in the endeavor to bring home the coveted shields. In the individual scoring St Canice’s were very much to the fore winning five of the six races. For the boys Oisin Henderson, Patrick Lacey and Rory McEvoy were the winners of 4th, 5th and 6th respectively. Ellie O’Carroll 5th class and Emily Smith 6th class scored for St Canice’s girls. The 4th class girls race was won in a very convincing manner by ClodaghO’Callaghan, Gael Scoil Osrai. Both these schools were also to the fore in the team competition. The KCH Shield for best boys’ school was won by St Canice’s who had first team victories in each of the boys races. Gaelscoil Osrai who had first team placings with 4th and 6th classes took the KCH Shield for best girls school. Kilkenny School Project took the honours for 5th class girls. Other schools to gain team medals were St Patrick’s De la Salle – 3rd in 4th class, 2nd in 5th class and 3rd in 6th class; St John of God were 2nd in 4th, 5th and 6th girls races; CBS had 2nd team in 5th class boys. The St Canice’s Credit Union Shield for best overall was presentedto Gaelscoil Osrai.

Thanks was expressed for the use of the castle grounds and for KCH who organised the event. There was praise for Cathal, Senan, Will and John – four students from St Kieran’s College – who set up the course, took the results and tidied up afterwards.
