Todays summer weather brought joy to all at cross-country Day 2 in Castlecomer. Our new tent got a good airing, even if it didn’t have to worry about rain. Many of our younger athletes enjoyed the day so much that they careered around the fields running much further in their enjoyment than they had run in their races.
Our first numbe ONEr was in race number one – the boys under 7 – with Darragh O’Callaghan taking the gold. Number two came in the girls under 9 when Ellen Daly ran a stormer to leave all the rest behind. Number three was Ellen’s sister Molly who finished strong in the under 11 race. Number four victory went to John Muldowney in boys under 17. A well deserved win for a dedicated young athlete. Win number six followed in boys under 19 with Shay McEvoy showing his usual form. KCH had 1,2,3 in this race as Kevin Burns took silver and Luke Whelan collected bronze. Our final individual gold came in the ladies over 45 with Cathy Millett storming through the field like an athlete of much fewer years. Other individual medal winners not on teams (apart from under 7s and under 9s) were Robert Lacey 3rd under 11 and Marie Cormack 3rd in Ladies O/45. Well done all.
In the team competition the club had two silver – (Girls under 11: 1 Molly Daly, 3 Clodagh O’Callaghan, 14 Kate Maher and 16 Martha Bergin), (Boys under 13: 4 Ruairi McEvoy, 6 Oisin Marry, 7 Sean Young, 9 Patrick Lacey, Luke Phillips) – and one bronze (Boys under 15: 3 Tom Lodge, 10 Joe Kearns, 17 Declan Walsh, 18 Danny Heddon). Our under 11 boys and under 13 girls lost out on team medals by very small margins.
