Our athletes had a great day at the AAI Games in Abbottstown today. Certainly it was a great day for Ciara Deely with a first place in the 200m including a PB of 25.09. But that wasn't all. Running the first leg of the 4x400m relay she is now part of that team heading for the European Juniors in Sweden in July. They won the relay in 3.45.27. There were PBs also for Shay McEvoy, James Kearney and Kevin Burns in the 3000m. Their respective times were 8.30.02, 9.08.78 and 9.28.73. We had three athletes at the National Indoors today, two under 23 - Callan Byrne and Jack Manning, and one Junior - Ciara Deely. Callan and Jack made the finals of the 6om with Callan placing 4th (7.09) and Jack 8th (7.26). Ciara was in the 400m and after winning her heat shefinished second in the final. Her time was 56.48.
Our two scholarship students in the US had very successful indoor performances to day. Peter Lynch, Tulsa, had a PB of 14.38.38 when he finished third in the 5000m in the Pittsburg Invitational. Aoibhe Richardson, Portland had her PB of 9.31 in the 3000m at the Washington Open in Seattle.
It was gold all round for our Ladies over 30 and Men over 35 at a cool, windy and slightly damp Kilmacow today. Golden all round because the individual gold and team gold in both events were won by KCH. The ladies made it 1, 2 and 3 individuals with Caitriona Muldowney, Donna Dunne and Caoimhe Foley gathering the individual gold, silver and bronze. Donna having led for most of the race was passed by Caitriona who stormed through the final lap. The ladies had good reserves with Kate Millea placing 7th and Sheila O'Callaghan 8th. It was another successful outing for twins Annie and Shay McEvoy. Both were on the Irish Under 20 teams competing at the Celtic International in Northern Ireland. Shay finsihed in sixth place and was second scorer on the team which came second. Annie who came eight was also the second scorer on the ladies the Irish team whic finished in third place.
Jennifer Leahy had a successful Penthatlon at the weekend. Competing in the national championships under 18 she finished in second place to claim the silver medal. In route to the medal she placed 2nd in Hurdles, 2nd in High Jump, 3rd in Shot, 2nd in Long Jump and 3rdin the 800m. Alex Cullen wentin the under 14 event and finished outside the medals in a creditable fourth place. His best event was the Long Jump where he came first.
Today was a good day for our (somewhat older) athletes at the Leinster Masters cross country in Gowran. Niamh Richardson continues to show her class to take first place in the over 50s race. Cathy Millett proved to be another class act to clinch the silver in the smae category. Both ladies claimed gold by being the first two scorers on the winning county team. The other (somewhat younger) masters had a mighty run in the over 35+ with Donna Dowling, Caitriona Muldowney and Barbara Rossiter to bring the team into 6th place in the inter club race. Their [...]
The county Indoor Championships were held in Athlone today. KCH juveniles, particularly the younger ones, travelled in good numbers by bus and car. The homecoming was a happy one as apart from many individual and relay medals won KCH brought home the Nicholas Flavin Shield for the best overall club. And there were many individual and relay medals - 23 boys collected 44 individual medals and 7 sets of relay medals - 28 girls collected 51 individual and 8 sets of relay medals. Todays 5KM in Stoneyford was well attended. The juveniles 1K got proceedings under way and Ruairi McEvoy who had been prominent from the start made it home in third place. KCH were very much to the fore in the adult event. Prominent at the early stages were Peter Lynch, Shay McEvoy and Aiobhe Richardson and they were still out in front at the finish. Peter made it first across the finish line under the 15 minutes (14.54) with Shay in second place , not far behind (15.08). Aoibhe Richardson (17.22) was first lady home. Today's 4 Mile in Clonmel had very much a Kilkenny flavour as KCH had first, second and third finishers in the personages of Brian Maher (19.01), Toss Hayes (19.07) and Eoin Everard (19.23). Not too far off thepace was Ken Maher in 18th (22.21). Well done men.
