This weekend brought the schools track and field season to a close. Finally with the weather starting to look like summer the athletes had an opportunity to enjoy the downtime alongside the competing.
KCH had nine athletes competing in individual events. Six of them won medals – Alex Cullen, CBS, was the star performer winning gold in the senior 400m hurdles and silver in the 110m hurdles. Also from CBS was Billy Coogan who won silver in the 3000m steeplechase. Friday night was a major test of Billy’s stamina as he also ran the 5000m where he placed fourth.
Four more silvers were won as follows:- Aisling Phelan, Castlecomer Community, 100m minor; Ellen Daly, Loreto, 200m junior (also 7th in 75m hurdles); Molly Daly, Loreto, 300m Intermediate; Pia Langton, Loreto, 800m senior.
Other finalists were Clodagh O’Callaghan, Presentation, 7th 800m Intermediate; Sinead Cormack, Presentation, 7/1500m Junior; and Matias Quaglia, Kilkenny College, 4/200m and 5/100m Intermediate.
A major highlight for our athletes was the Loreto 4x100m relay squad (Grace Delahunty, Kate Maher, Ella Wall and Molly Daly) who won gold in the Intermediate final.
