The St Senan's Annual Open cross-country held in Kilmacow today got the cross-country season up and running. The juvenile shiled was won by host club St Senan's. KCH had a small but quality representation. Lucy Maher was 7th in under 8. In the U9 races Ellen Daly won gold for the gilrs while Ryan Farrell was 6th in the boys race. Kate Maher and Martha Bergin placed 4th and 8th respectively in the girls under 10 race.
The annual Duck Race was held on the Nore, between St Francis Bridge and John's bridge, today. Prizes for the winning ten ducks will be presented this week. The winning cards were sold by Eoin Deely, Mark O'Connell, Ella Richardson, Elena Bakkla, Ruairi, Eobhaand Ultan Hanrahan, James Kovar, Doireann Hogan, Katelyn Hennessy, Charlie byrne and Danny Heddon. Sellers prizes were won by Luke Dunne, Ryan Corcoran, Grainne Molloy and Paul Smith.
There was a glut of races on the local roads over the weekend. Saturday brought us The Medieval Marathon - inclusive of 5K, 10K, 30K half and full. Then on Sunday wehadthe JJ Reddy - again with 5K, 10K, half and full. All times and places available on myrunresults and total timing respectively.
The much delayed Short Course CC found a new venue in the Castle Park today. The senior races were preceeded by juvenile races. Darragh O'Callaghan and Darragh Browne were first and third respectively in the under 7 race. Robert Cullen won bronze in the boys under 9 where Patrick Wall was an unlucky participant to get tripped up on entering the finishing chute. Our under 13 relay teams performed well with the girls coming second and the boys taking first and second. Peter Lynch started his cross-country campaign for Tulsa Hurricanes with a meet in Joplin, Missouri today. And what a start he made - cruising through the field of runners he place third and led the Hurricanes to victroy while clocking 24.56.2 for the 8Km race.
Thomas Hayes was the top performer at todays 10K road race in Moone. Not only did he win the event but he set a new time record of 31.03 for the event. Conrats. Congratulations also to our under 14 girls on today receiving the KCLR/David Buggy SportsStar Award for July.
Great weather, great location and a great day'a athletics at Grangemouth stadium the national athletics stadium of Scotish athletics. Right from the gun the competition matched the weather, hot. Up first in the late morning for KCH and Ireland was Rory. Excitement was palpable. In front of a supportive crowd, the bar was quickly raised to 1.96m. This proved too much for Rory so soon after his All Ireland win. Second place to the guest jumper in his first international outing and claiming full points for the team is quite a feat. Our two athletes had an excellent outing when competing in the Celtic Games in Grangemouth, Scotland today. Following on a fine track and field season on the home front they didn't disappoint when called up to the national squad. Shay McEvoy took the number one spot in the 3000m with another excellent time of 8.52. Rory McGabhann was no less impressive as he cleared 1.91 in the high jump to take second place. Well done lads and congratulations to your coaches who helped to bring you to this stage in your athletic development. Congratulations all.
Three of our athletes have been selected by the AAI for international events. Rory MvGabhann and Shay McEvoy are heading to Grangemouth in Scotland forthe Celtic Games on 4th August - Shay to compete in the 3000m and Rory in the high jump. And Ciara Deely has been selected for the 4x400m relay squad to compete in the European Championships in Berlin from 7th to 12th August.
With Cliodhna Manning, winner of national senior 400m in 2017, out of action through injury it was left to Ciara Deely to represent the club at the national senior track and field finals in Santry this weekend. And she represented us in style. In the second semi-final on Saturday she placed second in 55.56 to qualify for Sunday's final. Finishing 6th with a slightly better time of 55.37 in this her first time at these championships - and still a juvenile - was quite an achievement and augers well for the future.
