Shay McEvoy continued his good form with a splendid run in the 3000m under 18 at the national juvenile track and field finals in Tullamore today. His time was an excellent 8.51.27 - a result of consistant training throughout the season. There were many other good performances from our athletes at these finals - particularly from our distance runners. James Kearney won bronze in the under 18 steeplechase. With Cliodhna Manning, winner of national 400m in 2017, out through injury it was left to Ciara Deely to wear the singlet for KCH at this years championships. Running in Heat 2 of the 400m on Saturday she placed second in 55.36. In Sunday's final she had a slightly better time of 55.37 which earned her sixth place.  

Not for the first time this summer everything was hot in Tullamore - especially the weather and the competition. Rory McGabhann took both in his stride and with a powerfull new PB of 1.96m he took the gold in the under 18 national high jump. Congratulations to a great competitor and congrats also to Paddy O'Dwyer, the high jump coach.  Shay McEvoy clocked 4.07.26 to take second placein the 1500m under 18 - a race which included clubmates Kevin Burns (11th) and James Kearney (19th). Our distance runners were very much in evidence at the national juvenile track and field championships in Tullamore at the weekend.The club had three runners in the 3000m under 18 race. Shay McEvoy took the seven and a half laps in his stride and had a comfortable lead when crossing the finish line in 8.51.27 to take the gold. Kevin Burns finished 9th and Luke Whelan was 14th. Today was a big day in the life of Ciara Deely. It was Day 1 of the World Junior track and field being held in Tampere, Finland. Ciara ran in Heat 2 of the 400m and gave an excellent account of herself as she placed 6th in 54.69 seconds, marginally outside her PB. Congratulations to Ciara and her coach Nicola Barron on this achievement.

If travelling to Belfast for Round 1 proved difficult because of the distance involved, then travelling to Santry for Round 2 should have been considerably easier. But then perhaps it wasn’t the travelling that was difficult. Our four man team on this occasion – Nicholas Dunphy, Luke Whelan, Brendan Hyland and Kevin Burns – gathered a mere 23 points when 123 points might have helped us to stay in the competition.

Another hot day in Tullamore and with it came more hot results for KCH athletes. Top of the joy was the continuing success of the under 14 girls – Amelie Foley,Ella Delahunty, Abbie O’Brien, Orla Kenny and Blaithin Holden – 1st place in the relay final. Not far behind were the fleetfooted under 13 boys – Brian Moore, Danny Ring, Alex Cullen, Sean Young and Ruairin McEvoy – silver in their 4x100m final. Our next generation of athletes enjoyed their day in the sun as they competed in the national juvenile finals in a very warm Tullamore stadium. Our oldest athletes in action today were under 13 boys Alex Cullen and Adam Slawinski. Both performed well and establised new PBs. Alex in the long jump, jumped 4.73m and won bronze. Adam, in the high jump cleared 1.45m and also won bronze. Two great prospects for the future. Our under 10s really excelled. Tullamore resembled a bake oven today for the national junior and under 23 championships. Ciara Deely was not influenced by it as she won her heat and final to take the national 400m title. Tom O’Keeffe was also in excellent form to tackle the 5000m in that searing heat. Running well he placed third in 15.21.93. Juveniles making their debut at this level were Shay McEvoy in the 1500m and James Kearney in the 3000m steeplechase.
