A battle for glory on the Streets of Kilkenny

On a glorious Holy Thursday night over 600 runners took to the start line for the annual streets of Kilkenny 5K. The streets of the marble city make the perfect backdrop for a run on any evening but when surrounded by 600 eager runners the atmosphere is just fantastic. With a crowd of volunteers dotted along the 2 lap course, a race for the masses was ready to go. With a blow of the whistle from Sean Lynch, the runners were off. April 22 – National Road Relays in Raheny

KCH put up a strong challenge in the National Road Relays in Raheny today. The team of Toss Hayes, James Ledingham, Brian Maher and Eoin Everard completed the relay in 38.56 to take the bronze medals. A new look and younger team of Tom O’Keeffe, James Kearney, Shay McEvoy and Kevin Burns tasted the challenge and found it rewarding with a commendable 9th place finish.

The Track and Field season got underway with the staging of the St Senan’s event. A small cohort of Harriers made the trip to Kilmacow and acquitted themselves very well. Molly Daly was the star performer as she won gold in 80m and 300m under 11 and a third with the under 12 relay team. RESULTS- Under 9 Ellen Daly 3/80m, Under 11 Molly Daly 1/80m,1/300m; Under 12 Roisin Burns 3/80m, 3/Long Jump, James Bergin 2/700m, Girls 1/Relay; Under 13 Sean Young 2/100m, 2/long jump, 2/high jump; Under 14 Harry Boyle 2/100m.

In a very hot national indoor arena in Abbotstown in Dublin Kilkenny City Harriers athletes donned there black and amber singlet to take on the best of Ireland in the AAI open games. There was a fantastic atmosphere and great cheer as all athletes took on their own and showed their talent. Shay McEvoy had a magnificent performance to set a new PB and take the top spot in a 3k time of 8.42 minutes. Callan Byrne also claimed the top spot over 60m in a time of 7.1 seconds. National Junior & U/23 Indoor Championships

KCH athletes made the trip to Athlone to take on tough competition at the national Junior and u23 championships. A small field of athletes made the trip with some fantastic performances and some unfortunate events. Annie O’Connor took on the 800m claiming the bronze medal after a well fought race. Adam Fitzpatrick was out in the 1500m and was very unfortunate leading into the last bend with 20 metres to go the gold medal in sights was accidently tripped and went down. KCH Awards Night

A great night was had by all at the KCH awards in the Set Theatre Langton’s at Langton House Hotel a fantastic celebration of all the success in 2017. The awards night is a great way for athletes to meet up and bond outside of training. It is also a great social event for parents to get to know each other and development relationships with the coaches.
