Cathal O'Reilly took first place in today's 5k Streets of Portlaoise road race in 14.44. Among the other finishers were Sean Delaney, Orla McPhillips, Mike O'Shaughnessy, Paula Hynes and Bridget Rochford.
In todays 10K Mossy Roantree took first place in 36.24. Other good runs came from Sean Delaney and Billy Culleton.
This weekend was a joy for all in KCH or indeed for anyone associated with the club or having an interest in athletics. It started with the U20's national indoors with Molly Daly (400m) and Pia Langton (1500m). Both won gold in their respective events, set new championship records and in the process qualified for the World juniors. That was on Saturday. With the Leinster Schools CC taking place on 27th Feb it was a quick turn around for today's All-Ireland with travel to Belfast. Loreto had star performers in Emily O'Keeffe, 18th in Intermediate, and senior girls Hazel Coogan and Evelyn McEvoy, 35th and 60th respectively, helping the team to the gold medals. Borris Vocational had Daniel Greene winning bronze in The Minor race and Tom Murphy placing 30th in the senior race. Sinead Cormack, Presentation placed 18th in Intermediate. Myles Hewlett ran the Elite 1500m at tonight's Track and Field Live in Abbottstown and was first across the finish line in 4.01.92
Ellen Daly made a fine entrance to the senior ranks when competing in the National Senior Indoors in Abbottstown. Taking part in the 200m she clocked an excellent time of 25.70. Her older and more experienced sister, Molly, also had excellent results winning silver in the 200m final in 24.07. Pia Langton also made the podium. Making the 800m final she ran it in 2.09.19 to win bronze. In the longer races Cathal O'Reilly placed 10th in the 1500m final in 3.52.58. In the 3000m Ruairi McEvoy clocked 8.48.84 while Will Fox finished in 8.56.59.
Thomastown hosted a series of road races today -1 mile, 5k, 10k, 15k. KCH had runners in both 10k and 15k. In the 10k the men took first team prize with John Behan (35.29) finishing in first place and Colm Smyth taking second. Others were David FitzGerald, Derek Aylward, Billy Culleton and Pat Holohan. Katie Mullan did an excellent 60minute pacing to finish in 59.48. Thomas Meehan, Michael Grogan, Geraldine Grogan, Sarah Corcoran and Declan Bryan completed the 15k event.
The wet weather played havoc with many sporting fixtures this year . The Leinster Schools CC, after two postponements and change of venue, Went ahead in Navan today. KCH participating athletes gave a good account of themselves. In minor boys Daniel Greene took gold. At junior level the St Kieran's team won silver with Sam Woodcock 8th and Peter Quinn 41st. The Loreto girls were 7th with Emily O'Keeffe in 10th, Marija Kraljevic 53rd, Heidi Ryan 57th and Lucy Maher 91st. There also good results in Intermediate. A great crowd turned out for the club’s annual awards presentation which was held in The Pembroke Hotel. 2025 proved a very successful year for the club. Club Chairperson, Nicholas Dunphy, welcomed all to the awards and thanked the athletes for their dedication and achievements during the past year. He thanked all the coaches, managers, club officers and the parents for their ongoing support of the athletes and the hotel for hosting our event. While last weekend was relatively quiet this weekend was anything but with action in many quarters. The Leinster Juvenile Indoors in Athlone provided the major source of that action. KCH with fifty plus athletes involved had a very successful championship with in excess of twenty medals returning home. There was gold for Aaron Tyrell (U13 - 600); Cillian Maher U13 -walk)Daniel McIntyre (U13 - long jump); Daniel Greene (U15 800); Kyrell Mtinsi (U18 - 800); and Molly Daly (U19 - 400 CBP).
