2023 Results

Our Novice Ladies and Novice Men did the club proud at the County Novice Championships in Castlecomer today. Thanks to Kate Millea, Declan Walshe and Padraig Ruane organising the teams so that everyone had a team supporting. The ladies were away first and a great performance by Grainne Behan saw her take the individual silver. Gretta Beckett 6th, Aibhlin Murphy 8th and Aisling Gannon 10th completed the scoring and ensured the gold medal position for the team. We had lovely summer-like weather for Day 2 of the county cross country championships in Castlecomer today. KCH carried in a slight lead for the overall juvenile shield from day one. Great running and great numbers in our younger age cohorts extended that lead and enabled the club to win the shield for best cross country club in the county for 2023. Thankfully the weather today was so much an improvement on yesterdays. It made for better competition on a well organised course thanks to local club, St Joseph's. For KCH this was a good day from start to finish. With a better turnout in some of the age groups it could have been an amazing day.  In the non-championship under 8 it was Summer Nova with an 8th place finish who carried the KCH colours in the girls race. Once the St Senan's Open cross-country appears it means the cross-country season is up and running. A small number from KCH travelled for the event. A bad weather forecast didn't deter those seeking competition and a meaning-full preparation for the upcoming county championships. Individual medals were won at U8, U10 and U12. U8- Cian McIntyre won bronze; U10 - Daniel McIntyre won gold and Daniel Quinn won bronze. Runners from many parts of the country assembled for this annual multi-event around the city and rural environs. A considerable  number of local athletes were involved. Among these were the following  - 10K (Eddie Hawe, David Kennedy, Eoin Molloy, RitaMcGarvey, Mary Ann Molloy, Brigid Rochford; 30K (Ann Marie Shortall, Angela Lalor, Teresa Comerford); Half Marathon (Irene Henebry, Darragh Sharpe, Jo Scobie, Jackie Varley); Marathon (Emma Kenndy, Dee Scott, Breegen Murphy, Paul Comerford).

The new cross-country season got under way in the Castle Park today with a good turnout from our athletes. Despite forecasts of heavy and prolonged rain the event went ahead with very little need for umbrellas or coats. KCH athletes collected the majority of the medals. First race of the day was the over 50/s where the club had individual winners with David Lawlor and Niamh Richardson in the men' s and women's races. The men were third club with David, Brendan Phelan 6th, Sena O'hHArgain 11th and Martin Dowling 14th.  Under 7 girls had good results with Heidi Guilfoyle [...]

Tullamore was the venue for a half marathon today. And not just any half marathon as it doubled as an open half marathon and also the half marathon championship race for county Kilkenny, Leinster and National. KCH was well represented with a number of men and women competing. There were some fine individual runs and even better team performances.  Female Results - 255 Clare Dermody, 271 Jacinta Mulroe, 329 Lisa Collins, 365 Mary Prendergast, 410 Kate Sugrue, 778 Emma Staunton. As a team they scored very highly taking first and second place in county championship, first in Leinster, second O/35 [...]

The final of the national league was held in Tullamore today. This year's league had two rounds - the opening round and the final. There were six divisions - three for men (premier, division 1 and county) and three for women (premier, division 1 and county). KCH competed in the Men's Premier Division where they finished in seventh place. Nicholas Dunphy gathered nine points with first place in the 1500m walk. Cathal O'Reilly did likewise in the 5000m. Today was Masters Day at the national track and field championships in Tullamore. James Ledingham proved himself master of the 1500 as he took first place in 4.18.24 and bring home the gold medal. For good measure he also won silver in the 800m in a very good time of 2.03.05.

The county 10k road championships, run in conjunction with the Pink Rock 10k, was held in Rosbercon today. KCH had Men's and Women's teams. The men took the gold medals. Scoring were Padraig Ruane 6, Eamon O'Connor 8, Trust Mtinsi 10 and Shea Roddy 19. For backup they had Mark O'Duffy, David Lawlor and John Murphy. The ladies won silver with Claire Dermody 3, Lisa Collins 6, Kate Sugrue 9 and Louise Coogan 10. Their backup runners were Eileen Morgan and Anne Marie Shortall. Well done all.
